A little stupid info about voiceovers ...
The word or phrase voiceover or vo or voice over refers to a production style where voices are broadcast in radio, television, film, theater, etc. The voiceover may be done by people who also appear on-screen in other parts or it may be done by a narrator. Voiceover is also referred to as VO, voice over, voice-over or voicing. Voiceover can also refer to the actual voice talent who did the job. The terms voice talent, narrator, voice artist, announcer , and vo are all similarly used. In movies, an announcer or narrator provides narration for the story and sometimes does comments in voiceover. Narrator voicing is likewise used to give voices to cartoons. In film, they have the sound of a voice, or voices , over images shown on the screen that may or may not in contradiction to what's being shown. Also, an announcer is sometimes used to make a counter-opinion.
Being a Voice Over, VO, Voiceover, or Voice talent, an announcer or narrator is loads of fun and a great outlet. It takes a good voice ( and its even better if you have multiple voices), a good personality, a lot of drive, and finally ... equipment! A smart announcer, narrator, Voice Over, Voiceover, VO or Voice talent, will take the time to set up a small audio production studio. That way, you can send your voices to anywhere in the world! All one needs is a decent computer (nothing fancy), a cheap 5-10 channel mixing board, a decent cardiod mic and audio editing software, which can be found at huge discounts if you look in the right places! The work is tough and you won't get anywhere if you don't have a well-produced demo, but if you can handle playing the numbers game, go for it and have FUN!
... A Story About Voiceovers from an Anonymous Voice Talent
How do you get into voiceovers? Wow! That’s a tough question because one can get into doing voiceovers in a ton of different ways. For me, it was mostly a voiceover talent accident, if you will. I had no idea what voiceovers, voice overs, voice talent, narrator, narration, announcer or VO even meant. My voice talent career with, again, voiceovers began, I suppose, as a small ( voiceover talent ?) child. My parents always told me I was the kind of kid who always made noises (and voiceovers !) wherever I went, so its no surprise I eventually became a voiceover talent. I had always played pretend with all of my favorite neighborhood voice talent friends, creating voiceover characters that would later on in life appear in my voiceovers repertoire.
In high school, I enjoyed taking speech class, never thinking that I would end up a voice talent. All this VO stuff turned out to train me in voiceovers. It wasn’t until I went to college that I got a real taste for voiceovers and being in the voiceover talent industry. Voice talent is a funny word, isn’t it for VO ya think? Is it really a talent to have a voice? And, if I take the word voiceover talent and rearrange it, does it become voiceovers or vo or voice talent? At college, I got onto the college radio voiceover talent station and I suddenly realized, “hey, if I could get voiceovers paid for doing this then that’s the voice talent career for me! You see how I’m trying desperately to fit the word voiceover talent and the text voiceovers plus the letters voice talent and even VO into this stupid text as much as possible?
An Article on Why Someone Writes This ...
This is the only voiceover talent way to get the search companies to put me up on the voice talent results. Typing voiceovers or VO over and over again can get tedious, but voiceovers, like the rest of us voice talents need to pay the bills and put food on the voiceovers table.
Anyway, to continue the “how I got into voiceovers” thing, my voiceover and voice talent career was on hold for awhile. I didn’t do any vo work in this period. During this time, I focused my vo attention on other avenues of career building, not voiceovers and voice talent. It wasn’t until 1994 that I got back into using my voice talent as a way to earn money. That’s when I had moved to a great voiceover talent town, Phoenix, Arizona. There are a lot of thing happening in Phoenix for voiceovers. I had enrolled with voice talent at the Academy of Radio & TV Broadcasting in the voiceover talent area of Phoenix, Arizona. I had a wonderful voice talent time while I was there doing voiceovers. I met a lot of great voiceover talent while there and made a lot of voiceover talent friends. Not everyone was doing voiceovers, though. Some were just vo talents, others liked hear the voiceovers done by their own voice talent.
During that time, I also met, by default, people in the entertainment industry that I made voiceover talent friends with and they started having me do voiceovers for them. However, at this point, I still hadn’t thought of myself as a voice talent. I was just having too much vo talent fun. Fun with voiceovers and voiceover talent is tops! These people included voiceover talent musicians, events that needed voiceovers and gigs that required a good voice talent. At the academy, we all did various voiceover talent work when they had us practice doing the voiceovers for spot editing and voicing. That’s where a lot of good VO talents started to emerge. Some of those voiceover talents are doing professional voiceovers for film, TV and movies. Me? Well, I’m still trying to get as much voiceover or vo talent work as possible. That’s kind fo why I’m writing this long and boring voiceover talent article. Hopefully, it won’t bee too much for voiceovers and it won’t get kicked back. That’s the real goal here, though, isn’t it? Not every single sentence has to have the word voiceover talent or anything to do with voiceovers. Boy, am I getting tired of this … and there’s still more voice talent stuff to go! Wow!

An Article on Radio Stations and Voiceovers ...
Not too long after graduating from the academy 5 months later, I got my first radio job and subsequent voiceover talent and voice talent jobs. The station was KHOT, a weird little sister voice talent station to a bigger conglomerate of voiceovers. Our program and vo director was a strange, kind of immature voiceover talent lady that eventually got nabbed for drunk voiceovers and driving while intoxicated. She had evidently hit someone after being a voiceover talent for a studio. Upon investigation, police found actual bits (like a finger!) of this voice talent guy stuck in the vo lady’s grill of her voiceover car. So, here’s some advice … you voice talents out there … don’t go drinking after doing voiceover talent work! It will be tough for anyone to hire you for voiceovers if you’ve got a bad reputation. Nuff said!
My time at KHOT (Phoenix, Arizona) afforded me a lot of first-time learning about voiceovers and the voiceover talent industry. I learned quickly that being a vo or voice talent didn’t just mean having a good voice, but HOW TO USE IT. It’s not enough to have a good voice in doing voiceovers or being a voiceover talent. You must have decent voice talent equipment and must know how to implement it for good vo work. It wasn’t too long after that that I began working for KFYI in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a news-talk station and I distinctly remember the voiceover talent they had chosen to do their imaging. The guy literally sounded like the voice talent of GOD. Say, do you think GOD would be a good voiceover talent? I bet HE would. I mean, where else would the term, “voice of GOD” come from?
Anyway, being at KFYI was good for me. I was allowed to dive into a lot of things, like doing the news, producing shows and, of course, doing voiceovers. In fact, they had a lot of voiceovers to do and not a whole bunch of voice talents on hand. While I was at KFYI in Phoenix, Arizona, I met and eventually began to work for a financial firm as their marketing director. The owner of the firm had his own financial advisory business and had a radio show to go along with it. While working there, he decided to produce a marketing video and he chose me to do the voiceover talent work for it. I suppose this was really my first actual voiceover talent gig. When we did the voiceover, we had gone to a local TV station who the guy had hired to do the voice talent marketing video. The producers all said I had a career in voiceovers.
This really excited me as I though of a great way to make money being a voiceover talent providing professional voiceovers. I was on the video’s rolling credits as a voice talent. It was very cool. Gosh, I am so tired of writing about professional voiceovers and professional voice talent. Only a little more to go, though. After working at KFYI in Phoenix Arizona and providing professional voiceovers I got a job at the biggest radio station in all of Phoenix Arizona. That was KTAR, where I also did some professional voiceover talent work. That was the first time I was exposed to big-time professional voice talent and professional vo artists. They gave me a lot of professional voiceover talent advice which allowed me to move on in professional voice talent work.
An Article on Owning Your Own Voice Talent & Production Service ...
I own my own voiceover talent or voice talent and production company which I do from home. Since then, I’ve done a great deal of voiceovers. They include: Quality Inn - voiceovers; Cocopah Casino – voice talent; Avi Casino & Resort – voiceover talent, National Sand Drag Association – voiceovers; Fast Track Racing – voice talent; Kingman/Route 66 Speedway Project – voiceovers; City Of Williams – voice talent; Avondale Dodge – voiceover talent; Keller Toyota – voiceovers; Planet Sand – VO talent; Ohton Racing – voice talent; Renaissance In The Pines, Inc.- voiceover talent; Bill’s Sound Experience – voice talent; Pizza Heaven – voiceovers; Pepsi Special Events – VO talent; Dome Valley Raceway – voiceover talent; Grand Canyon Northland Amusements & Entertainment LLC – voiceovers; Northern Arizona Federal Credit Union – voice talent; Star Health Hospitals – voiceovers; He-Man Oil Products – VO talent; Brasdon Theatres – voiceover talent; EMG Productions – more voiceovers!
Being a voice talent can be extra tough these days. There are so many voice talents out there that its almost impossible to simply search for one voice talent and make it simple. When you do a voice talent Google search, for instance, your results for that voice talent search will be in the tens of millions. Which one is the right voice talent? Well, that depends on the project you need a voice talent for, and how you want the voice talent to sound. If you need a voice talent that sounds smooth, then you’d probably be doing a cologne commercial. If your doing a car sales ad, you’ll want a big booming voice talent. If you’re doing a funeral home spot, then you’d want a low-key compassionate-sounding voice talent. If you’ve got a radio or TV station, then you’ll want a deep-sound professional voice talent. And the fact is, there are so many voice talents with so much voice talent range, choosing just the right voice talent can be mind-boggling. If you want to be a voice talent yourself, be ready for some serious voice talent competition and a lot of rejections before being a recognized professional voice talent.
